Every year this little ol' town called Salisbury throws one of the biggest festivals in NC: The Cheerwine Festival!
What is Cheerwine? In its most simplest form, its cherry cola. But it's much more than that! Cheerwine is a way of life! Founded in 1917 in Salisbury, North Carolina by L.D. Peeler, this bubbly, cherry-flavored drink has been a Southern staple for over a century. Initially created during a sugar shortage, its unique cherry taste comes from a flavoring initially intended for use in whiskey.
I think I love the soda so much simply because it's made here in NC. Always support local if/when you can! I love Coke, but that's an Atlanta thing.
I want something more "Down home, down the street"
The Cheerwine Festival, celebrated annually in Salisbury, is a testament to the beverage’s iconic status in North Carolina. Each May, the festival attracts thousands of visitors who come to enjoy live music, local food vendors, and plenty of Cheerwine.
From Cheerwine-infused barbecue sauces to Cheerwine ice cream, the festival showcases the versatile ways to enjoy the local soda. Believe me, there are SO MANY WAYS! I myself tried a few! Highly recommend Cheerwine BBQ (you're in NC, you gotta!)
Cheerwine lemonade, honey, jelly, ice pops, prok rinds, beer/ale, cotton candy, slushies, Italian ice, and so much more! I wanted to try literally everything, but couldn't because my stomach said no 😅
It's not just a celebration of a drink; it's a cultural event that brings the community together, featuring arts, crafts, and activities for all ages. This event truly highlights the local love and pride for this home-grown favorite. I cannot wait to go next year! 😁
